Preservation in Practice - Residential Workshop

The Rapid City Historic Preservation Commission is hosting 2 interactive workshops on May 15 & May 16, 2026.
These workshops will explore historic preservation in real time, led by our instructor, Katherine Wonson with Old School Heritage Solutions. Attendees will gain a solid understanding of the fundamentals that shape preservation decisions as they explore these concepts in real life. Through interactive discussions and exercises, participants will learn how preservation works in practice – not just in theory.
These workshops will involve both classroom learning and field exercises. We will begin at City Hall in a classroom setting and will then set out to explore concepts with real life examples in the historic districts. Contractor Continuing Education Credits are available for workshop attendance!
The Friday, May 15th workshop will explore the Rapid City Downtown Historic District.
The Saturday, May 16th workshop will explore the West Boulevard Historic District.
Snacks will be provided and we will break for lunch.
