Preservation in Practice - Residential Workshop

The Rapid City Historic Preservation Commission is hosting 2 interactive workshops on May 15 & May 16, 2026.
These workshops will explore historic preservation in real-time and will give attendees a solid understanding of the fundamentals of the concepts and terminology that shape real-world preservation decisions. Through interactive discussions and exercises, participants will learn how preservation works in practice - not just in theory.
These workshops will involve both classroom learning and field exercises. We will begin at City Hall and will then set out to explore the concepts with real life examples in the historic districts.
The Friday, May 15th workshop will explore the Rapid City Downtown Historic District.
The Saturday, May 16th workshop will explore the West Boulevard Historic District.
Snacks will be provided and we will break for lunch.
